A story of Reunification

Two years ago, Deidra* never imagined she would be navigating life without her children. She is a mother of three—one adorable little girl and two sweet boys—and her life changed quickly when a series of hardships pushed her family into crisis.

It began with an accident. The children’s father had been supporting the household but was injured at work and was suddenly unable to keep providing for his family. The loss of income created a financial strain that grew heavier each month. Bills piled up, resources ran thin, and despite Deidra’s efforts to keep everything together, the situation eventually reached a point where the state intervened. Her children entered foster care.

For Deidra, it was one of the most painful seasons of her life.

“Everything had fallen apart,” she said. “Losing my kids was the worst day and all I could think about was if I would ever get to hold them again.”

But even in this impossible time, God had a plan.

When Deidra’s children entered foster care, they were placed with foster parents named Krystal* and Lamar*. From the very beginning, they understood that the goal of foster care is reunification. They knew that supporting the family to help get them back on their feet and reunite with their children would be a means to share the Gospel.

Krystal and Lamar welcomed the three children into their home and provided stability, love, and structure during a confusing time. But Krystal also made a decision that would change Deidra’s life. She chose to care for her, too.

Instead of seeing Deidra as an outsider, Krystal treated her like a partner in the children’s lives. She encouraged communication, supported visits, and reminded Deidra that this difficult season did not define her future as a mother.

“I never felt like I was replaced,” Deidra shared. “She reminded me all the time that I was their mom and she made sure to send me pictures a few times a week… One time she sent me a ‘Happy Birthday’ card from her and the kids”

Krystal was a huge support for Deidra. Over time, the two became friends. Their relationship was built on trust, encouragement, and the shared love for the three children.

While her children were in foster care, Deidra worked hard to stabilize her life. She continued to care for her husband but also began to work. She continued showing up for her children whenever she could. Throughout that journey, Krystal remained one of her biggest supporters. She offered guidance, encouragement, and at times, just someone to listen.

About six months ago, after nearly two years apart, Deidra’s children were able to come home.

For Deidra, reunification wasn’t just the return of her children. It was also the beginning of a new chapter for her whole family. What makes their story even more special is that Krystal didn’t disappear once the case closed.

Today, Krystal and Lamar continue to be part of the children’s and Deidra’s lives. They act as an occasional babysitters, they attend all the kids’ soccer and t-ball games, and they support Deidra as she navigates full-time parenting again.

Stories like Deidra and Krystal’s remind us that foster care is not about replacing families. Foster care is about restoration and coming alongside parents in difficult seasons so that children can one day return home.

Today, their relationship looks different than it did two years ago, but it remains rooted in the same shared commitment to the children. Deidra’s story is a reminder that when foster parents and biological parents work together, restoration is possible. Krystal and Lamar cared for the children in their home, but they also chose to invest in the family those children came from. Because of that, what began as a crisis has become a story of support, healing, and redemption.
