A Squishmallow Christmas
Seven-year-old Nova came into foster care just before Thanksgiving with lots of questions, hurt, and confusion. The transition was difficult on her, but over time, Nova learned she could trust her foster parents. This was a very big win—since early experiences of loss or instability can make trusting adults feel scary at first. They eventually learned that she had always wanted one of those giant Squishmallows that she saw other kids carrying around.
As Christmas approached, her foster mom tucked that detail away with a smile.
On Christmas morning, Nova walked into the living room to find a soft, oversized Squishmallow— bigger than she was— waiting under the tree. She froze, eyes wide, then wrapped both arms around it in a hug. By the evening, after all the presents had been opened, her foster family found her curled up on the couch, fast asleep with her new Squishmallow.
But the gift isn’t just the stuffed animal. It’s the feeling of having people who show up for her—people who cheer for her small wins, listen to her big feelings, and remind her every day that she is safe and cherished.
This Christmas, children like Nova are discovering comfort, security, and the simple joy of being surrounded by a family who cares. Thank you for helping make moments like these possible.
Your generosity helps ensure more children like Nova experience safety, stability, and joy—will you consider giving?
