Blessings at Christmas and Beyond

“I’m a firm believer that if you ask a lot of people to do a little bit of work, you can achieve some pretty cool things,” says Ace McKay, Radio Host at 93.7 WDJC, Birmingham-based Christian music station.

We definitely saw these kinds of achievements shining through this year, as the children in our care at Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes (ABCH) were blessed by so many groups all around the state during the Christmas 2017 season; today we want to share a little more about two of them whose first-time efforts impacted our kids in the Birmingham and Decatur areas: 93.7 WDJC and Church on The Rocks outreach ministry.

Stockings with Care

Ace McKay, along with his coworkers at WDJC, was excited to collect and share gifts from the community for a few ministries around Birmingham, one of them being ABCH. They named the effort “Stockings with Care” and, as shared on their website, this event was created as “a way to send the message of the hope and love of Jesus.”

They invited a variety of businesses—namely Werner’s Trading Company in Cullman, Tanya’s Boutique, and The Cottage of Serendipity—to partner with them by giving shoppers the option to purchase items from their store that could be donated and also serve as collection points for other items given. The Birmingham listening community was invited throughout the month of December to participate, and the station was pleased at the turnout!

“For us,” Ace says, “promotion is really all about what we can do to give back. We love to feed into where there’s a need. We want to go beyond just playing great music on the radio, to raise people’s awareness of the good that other organizations are doing in the community, and to invest in the lives of people here.”

Church on the Rocks

Church on The Rocks (COTR) is an outreach ministry devoted to spreading the gospel through off-road community, founded in 2016 by Dan and Lisa Underwood.

Dan says, “About four years ago, God laid it on our hearts to start a ministry . . . Lisa and I believe that your mission field is the ground you are standing on, so, combining that with my love of rock crawling and off-roading, we created Church on The Rocks. Our goal is to reach people with the Gospel right where they are.”

This Christmas season, COTR hosted their first “Christmas Crawl Toy Run 2017” in Hawk Pride, Alabama, to benefit our children in care at our Decatur campus. Chief Operations Officer, North Alabama, Dr. Michael Smith says, “I am very grateful to Dan Underwood and his family for reaching out to our children through their work with Church on the Rocks. The toys they collected at their event helped serve many of our children during the Christmas season. I look forward to a continued relationship with Dan and his family!”

As connected to the mission of their ministry, Dan says of the event, “We try and use things like our first annual toy run this past December to draw people in, meet them, and hopefully build relationships with them and show them the Gospel. It also gives us a chance to be a blessing to amazing organizations like [ABCH]. This was our first year, and we learned a lot, so we hope to go bigger and better next year . . . We are looking forward to seeing where God leads us and what He will do through our relationship with ABCH.”

We are so thankful for organizations like 93.7 WDJC and Church on The Rocks, for their generosity towards our children and families. If you would like to learn more about the needs of our children and families in care, and how you can help, please visit our 13 Ways to Serve page.
