Lessons From My Father

Jun 28, 2010

An old straight razor and shaving brush, a pair of wire rim glasses and an old pocket watch are displayed in a shadow box on the wall in my home. While these items do not have any monetary value they have great sentimental value to me because they belonged to my father. I look at them and they remind me of him.

As a small child I remember watching my dad shave with the old straight razor and his warnings for me not to touch it. Providing instructions to protect children is one of the many things a loving father and mother do. To protect is one of the first commitments in the mission statement of the Children’s Homes — we want to protect children from abusive and dangerous situations when they don’t have parents who function in that role.

My dad’s glasses remind me that he was always watching over me — not only to protect, but also to instruct and lead. There are many scripture references in the Bible such as Psalms 68:5 that speak of God being a father to the fatherless. I know that God in His sovereignty can provide for the fatherless, but I think He also calls us to join Him in that responsibility. I am so grateful for the house parents, foster parents, and staff who serve through Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries to watch over the fatherless committed to our care.

My dad’s old watch reminds me not only of the passing of time, but also of the importance of using time wisely. Children need their father’s and mother’s time — in great quantity as well as quality. Time is a valuable commodity and children need to know their fathers and mothers have time for them.

On behalf of the children that we serve, I want to thank you for your support that allows us to protect, nurture, and restore children and families through Christ-centered services.
