Camp of Champions 2010

“Trust in the Lord … He will make your path straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Overheard at Camp:
Counselor: "What did you eat for lunch?"
Small child: "Ice Cream!"
More than 400 children, foster parents, house parents, staff members and Volunteer Associational Ambassadors attended our annual Camp of Champions at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center. The theme, Decision 2 Destiny, was based on Proverbs 3:5-6, encouraging the attendees to recognize the importance of relying on God because the decisions they make today will affect their lives tomorrow.

And while they did enjoy the ice cream at meals, the children also studied the Bible, did crafts, and had fun during recreation time, swimming, playing putt-putt golf or riding the pedal cars.
But camp is also a time for the larger “family” of the ministry to reunite. Foster and house parents received training from professionals to help them in nurturing the children placed in their care as well as meet yearly training requirements.
Campers also enjoyed the wonderful snacks that were donated. This is one of my favorite times every year as I see their smiles when they find out the snacks are free for them.

All campers enjoyed relaxation and fellowship by the camp fire as they roasted marshmallows, sandwiching them between Graham Crackers and Hershey bars – creating good old s’mores. The second night, campers watched a movie and then enjoyed a bedtime snack at Shocco’s snack shop, made possible by generous gifts from donors.
We were also able to honor Barry Mann for his 11 years of service at Camp, teaching the 5th and 6th grade classes. I surprised him with a plaque during the dinner hour (Photo at right: Barry Mann on the left.)
Camp was a great success this year. If not for the contributions from Alabama Baptists, churches, businesses, donors, our ambassadors, a great staff, and a host of volunteers, our camp would not have accomplished its goals of providing spiritual growth, training, rest and fun.
